Captain Cook Run

The Captain Cook Run takes place on January 1st each year. Registration is at the Royal Oak between 10 to 11am with the run aiming to start at 11am. The run starts at the Royal Oak, goes up to Little Ayton, through Fletcher's Farm and up to the Captain Cook monument, down through Gribdale and along Dikes Lane turning right up Aireyholme Lane then back to Great Ayton. The run is 5.3 miles long, climbs 885 ft and is the first event of the North Yorkshire Moors Athletic Club Fell Running season. Over 200 runners normally take part with the leading runner completing the run in just over half an hour.

The 2009 run raised over £1500 pounds for charity. A four figure sum will go to Zoes Place, the Middlesbrough Children's Hospice with three smaller sums going to local groups. There was a record turnout of 259 seniors and 21 juniors.
